ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
Equipped with a high-tech research platform in experimental and clinical neuroscience, the Institute is among the leading Russian research institutions in its field. Its research findings are published in high-impact scientific journals indexed in prestigious databases — Web of Science, Scopus, and the Scientific Electronic Library eLibrary.ru.
The Institute employs over 160 staff members, including 31 Candidates of Sciences (PhD equivalent), 29 Doctors of Sciences (post-doctoral degree), and 1 full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Institute's doctoral program trains highly qualified researchers in the new discipline of 'interdisciplinary brain research' to support both established and emerging fields of neuroscience.
Our Mission
The Institute's mission is to establish a leading center in the fields of neuroscience and medicine that might promote innovative experimental and clinical translational research. The goal is to develop personalized diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for risk prediction, early diagnosis, effective prevention, and treatment of subclinical neuropsychiatric, affective, psychosomatic, and neurodegenerative disorders.
The methodological platform is the concept of "precision mental health", based on the integration of biological, behavioral, and genetic data, including units of analysis at the level of genes, molecules, cells, neuronal networks, physiology, behavior, and neuropsychology to assess processes along the continuum from health to disease. The object include experimental (genetic and pharmacological) models of mental and psychosomatic disorders, healthy individuals and patients with stress‑induced subclinical neuropsychiatric disorders, and common neurodegenerative and mental illnesses.
Methodological Platform
Our research methodology adopts a translational approach, explaining pathology in terms of the degree of deviation from fundamental normative parameters of the systems under study.
In line with the national priorities for the development of science in the Russian Federation, the Institute conducts fundamental, exploratory, and translational research aimed at developing innovative personalized biomedical and cognitive technologies of the future – diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic psychoneurotechnologies in the field of mental health, preventive and regenerative medicine – to ensure active and healthy longevity.

The Federal State Scientific Institution "Institute of Neurosciences and Medicine" was founded in 1967 as the Institute of Physiology of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences by Decree No. 985‑r of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR of April 22, 1967. In 1973, it was transferred to the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (since 1992 – the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences).
In 1994, by Resolution No. 42 of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, a psychosomatic clinic, “A1 Clinic”, was established on the basis at the Institute.
In 2013, by Resolution No. 91 of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, updated research priorities of the Institute were approved. Their content laid the foundation for a new stage in the Institute’s development and for its renaming, by Order No. 1311 of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations of December 15, 2014, to the “Research Institute of Physiology and Fundamental Medicine” (FSBI “RIPFM” SB RAMS).
By 2020, the key focus of the Institute’s main departments had shifted to research in experimental and clinical neuroscience. The results demonstrated that the team of scientists had achieved competencies at both national and international levels. Consequently, at the initiative of the Department of Medical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences and with the support of RAS Vice‑President, Academician V.P. Chekhonin, the Institute was renamed by Order No. 1229 of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation of September 23, 2020, to the Federal State Scientific Institution “Research Institute of Neurosciences and Medicine” (FSSI “RINM”).
The Institute continues to make steady progress in the study of affective pathology, primarily major depressive disorder, using structural, functional, and diffusion tensor tractography MRI to investigate the causes of neuropsychiatric disorders in large patient cohorts. Within international projects, new brain microstructural markers have been identified in patients with major depressive disorder, revealing relationships between cortical thickness and grey matter volume abnormalities in specific localizations, fractional anisotropy of white matter pathways, and depression severity, associated chronic insomnia, treatment resistance, and the rate of brain aging.
The Institute demonstrates high achievements in research on oscillatory neuronal networks, EEG and fMRI correlates of motivational attention and the balance of motivational systems, personality traits, self-awareness and social cognition, neurophysiological mechanisms of information selection in models of attention, memory, and creative activity. It also conducts research on the biological basis of functional reserves of the body under high and low physical activity, adaptive effects of hypoxic and muscle loads, as well as children’s mental health and well-being.

The Institute conducts exploratory scientific and translational clinical research aimed at developing personalized technologies for risk prediction, early diagnosis, and effective therapy of common affective and neurodegenerative disorders. In 2024, in line with the priority areas of scientific and technological development and the List of Critical High‑Tech Technologies under Presidential Decree No. 529 of June 18, 2024, and in order to consolidate efforts to create conditions for exploratory and translational research targeting diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic psychoneurotechnologies in the field of mental health, preventive, regenerative, and psychosomatic medicine – thereby ensuring active, healthy longevity and improving the quality of medical care – the Institute’s clinic was reorganized into the Clinical Research Center “Center for Non‑Invasive Brain Stimulation, Sleep Medicine and Neurotechnology”. The scientific leadership of the Center was assumed by Professor Lyubomir I. Aftanas, MD, PhD, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Within the framework of the Priority Directions for the Development of Science in the Russian Federation, the Institute actively participates in cooperative projects with relevant federal institutions of the Russian Federation (educational, research, and medical, including the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies of Novosibirsk State University as part of the national science development program “Priority 2030” of the Ministry of Education and Science).

Biomarkers of Mental Disorders
Analysis of multimodal (molecular‑genetic, neurophysiological, neuroimaging, and neurovegetative) endophenotypes and markers of the individual organization of functional brain domains / mental health matrices and and the interaction between the brain, body, and consciousness; assessment of their contribution to the pathogenetic mechanisms of affective (depression, anxiety spectrum disorders), neurodegenerative, and psychosomatic diseases.

Smart Brain Stimulation
Exploratory and translational studies in healthy individuals and patients aimed at developing personalized biomedical psychoneurotechnologies of non‑invasive brain stimulation (including immersive technologies, e.g., virtual reality) – diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic – in the field of mental health and brain‑body‑consciousness interactions. The research is based on the concept of "neuroenhancement" using non‑invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) of the brain's main information‑processing systems by mobilizing the mechanisms of perception, attention, conceptualization, memory, thinking, motor functions, emotional competence, and emotion regulation.

Functional Reserves
Study of the biological basis of human functional reserves, individual‑typological characteristics, and universal psychophysiological mechanisms of activity regulation, including network processes, during physical and cognitive loads; neuro‑visceral integration in health and under stress, including in elite sports.
